Texas CDL Permit (CLP) Checklist
Before you can take the CDL skills test in Texas, you need a Commercial Learner Permit (CLP). Here’s exactly what you need to get it — and what comes next.
Step 1 — Get Your CLP
What You Need to Get a Texas Commercial Learner Permit (CLP)
The Texas CLP is issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). To obtain your CLP, you will need to visit a Texas DPS driver license office and pass the CDL knowledge tests for the license class you are pursuing.
Required items at the DPS office:
- Proof of Texas residency (current Texas address)
- Proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful presence
- Social Security Number
- Your current Texas driver’s license
- DOT medical examiner’s certificate (medical card) — obtained before your visit
- Payment for the CLP fee (contact DPS for current fees)
At the DPS office, you will take written knowledge tests covering general CDL knowledge, air brakes (if applicable), and any endorsements you plan to hold. Passing all required tests results in the issuance of your CLP.
CLP Checklist Summary
- DOT Medical Card — schedule a DOT physical exam with a certified medical examiner before visiting DPS. Your medical card must be current and valid.
- Study the CDL Handbook — Texas DPS provides a free CDL handbook at dps.texas.gov. Read it before your knowledge test.
- Take the Knowledge Tests — General Knowledge is required for all CDL classes. Combination Vehicles is required for Class A. Additional tests may apply for endorsements.
- Wait 14 Days — After receiving your CLP, Texas requires you to hold it for at least 14 days before taking the CDL skills test.
Step 2 — After You Have Your CLP
What Comes After Your Texas CLP
Once you hold your CLP for the required 14-day waiting period, you are eligible to schedule your CDL skills test with a Texas DPS office. The skills test has three parts: pre-trip vehicle inspection, Basic Control Skills, and road test.
You will need to bring a qualifying truck and trailer to the DPS skills test. This is where FastPass CDL comes in — we provide the truck, trailer, range practice, and test-day support so you arrive at the Wichita Falls DPS office prepared.
DFW-area DPS offices are often booked 2–4 months out for CDL skills tests. Wichita Falls DPS typically has earlier availability. Many DFW applicants drive two hours to test in Wichita Falls to avoid the long wait.

Do I Need ELDT Theory Before the CDL Skills Test?
The Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) requirement applies to first-time CDL applicants and certain upgrade situations. If ELDT applies to you, you must complete it through an approved ELDT provider before taking the CDL skills test.
FastPass CDL does not provide ELDT classroom theory. If you need ELDT, complete it online through an approved provider first — then apply to FastPass CDL for the practical skills-test preparation.
Not sure if ELDT applies to you? Contact Texas DPS or consult the FMCSA ELDT requirements for your specific situation before scheduling your skills test.
